Ya’ll ain’t read this wrong, ya boy TMH got them early leaks because I just couldn’t wait. Joey Bad$$ has been silent since last year with his appearance on “Escape from New York” by Beast Coast in 2019 but Joey hasn’t released a new album since 2017 with “All-Amerikkkan Badass.” Joey is easily one of my favorite MC’s of the 10’s, if you have never experienced him live ya’ll may wanna peep him when he goes on tour again. So lets just dive into this real quick, I wanted to do a one on one with each song because who knows what else Joey will surprise us with, maybe that STEEZ album.
The Light – Joey Bada$$
“The Light” is the first of three songs in this EP, Joey talks about being away from the music scene but how like Austin Powers in The Spy Who Shagged Me. He brings his consciousness too the track where he speaks about how he doesn’t care about getting any awards for his music, that his music has more too it then what critics think, a blend of Gandhi and Muhammad Ali in this rap game. His production on this track was funky, reminded me a lot of “Dance With The Devil” by Immortal Technique.
No Explanation – Joey Bada$$ (Ft Pusha T)
Yo who the fuck saw this coming bro, King Push with the Beast from the East is a combination I didn’t know I needed like BBQ Chicken pizza, straight fire here. Joey starts off this track with a beat that has your neck in motion while Bada$$ grips ya ears like a mic, his flow/delivery starts off slow almost being the same sound from “All-Amerikkkan Badass” but more poetic, matured as he raps about how he’s been in his mind a lot more, shit bro Joey pulls a Inspectah Deck type verse on this. Pusha T enters with his signature voice that sees him shoot down a row of foes with razor sharp lyrics, I can’t even stress how hot this shit is man. Joe gets a final verse in towards the end which helps wrap up this wicked track I now need on repeat to appreciate each bar. Production is great too, this new sound Bada$$ is using has a lot of uniqueness too it while keeping the crispiness of his OG production.
Shine – Joey Bada$$
Yooooooooo, there ain’t enough commons too put on how much money this brother Joey deserves for the fire beat. This another great sample of Roy Ayers “Everybody Loves The Sunshine” with a high energy, lofi hip-hop like beat that soothes my soul with beautiful drums, snares and cords. “Shine” continues the energy of “The Light” where Joey now speaks on the strides he’ll take to get back on top in the rap game while how he is enjoying the apples of his labor. Overall this was a solid track, wasn’t my favorite of the three but still was a good listen.

This is fire yo, this is some of the hottest music lyrically to come out during the shutdown, I am so grateful for new music but Joey I do hope for another album by next year. The rap game ain’t the same, we need you. But be ready for this too drop July 17th, 2020. I am The Musical Hippie and these are my thoughts on “The Light Pack” by Joey Bada$$.
